What is an MRI scan of the shoulder?

Shoulder complaints can persist for a long time and significantly curtail daily activities. The symptoms from within the shoulders can also radiate towards the neck and the arms. An MRI scan of the shoulders can be performed to help detect the cause of these complaints.

Why get an MRI scan of the shoulder?

Shoulder complaints and shoulder pain can last for a long time and can always recur. The pain can radiate to the shoulder blades, neck, elbow or fingers and can severely limit you in your daily work. So it is important to obtain a fast, accurate diagnosis.

Cervicobrachial neuralgia (neck/shoulder pain) or CANS (complaints of the arm, neck and/or shoulder) are common. This is also referred to as RSI. One possible cause is straining the shoulder or neck during sporting activities. This may, for example, involve carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow or rotator cuff syndrome. However, sometimes there is no clear medical cause to be found for the pain in the neck and shoulder. A supplementary examination in the form of an MRI scan may be necessary to get an idea of what is really going on.

A scoulder scan provides you with insight into the nature and possible causes of your symptoms: shoulder joint, wear/arthrosis or inflammation. We can help you with a targeted MRI scan – without a referral - within one week. You learn the result in the week after the examination so you know where you stand. You receive the recorded images on a CD-ROM.

One of the nurses will gladly advise you of the options for undergoing an MRI scan in a personal advisory consultation.

MRI scan shoulder

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is a technique for examining the most vital organs and blood vessels in detail. During the examination, the MRI scanner creates a large number of images of your shoulder by using a large magnetic field, so cross-sections can be created. The computer presents the images as slices to facilitate subsequent assessment of the results. Our specialists can view the images at any random angle, allowing them to observe details from 5 mm. The magnetic field and the radiofrequency waves are not harmful to your health.

During scanning, you lie on a comfortable couch, which is pushed into a kind of tunnel that is tunnel is open at both the front and back. If you find lying in the tunnel claustrophobic, you may have someone with you in the MRI room. A nurse will be on stand-by to provide information and, if necessary, put you at ease. In addition, during the MRI scan, you have a bell you can use to interrupt the scan in case of emergency.
